TheleadingarttheoristtakesonartintheageoftheInternetIntheearlytwentiethcentury,artanditsinstitutionscameundercritiquefromanewdemocraticandegalitarianspirit.Thenotionofworksofartassacredobjectswasdecriedandsubsequentlytheywouldbeunderstoodmerelyasthings.Thismeantanattackonrealism,aswellasonthetraditionalpreservativemissionofthemuseum.AcclaimedarttheoristBorisGroysarguesthisledtothedevelopmentof“directrealism“anartthatwouldnotproduceobjects,butpractices(fromperformancearttorelationalaesthetics)thatwouldnotsurvive.Butformorethanacenturynow,everyadvanceinthisdirectionhasbeenquicklyfollowedbynewmeansofpreservingart’sdistinction.Inthismajornewwork,Groyschartstheparadoxesproducedbythistension,andexploresartintheageofthethinglessmedium,theInternet.Groysclaimsthatifthetechniquesofmechanicalreproductiongaveusobjectswithoutaura,digitalproductiongeneratesaurawithoutobjects,transformingallitsmaterialsintovanishingmarkersofthetransitorypresent.
