FeaturinganintroductionbyRachelMaddow,Pegasus:HowaSpyinOurPocketThreatenstheEndofPrivacy,Dignity,andDemocracyisthebehind-the-scenesstoryofoneofthemostsophisticatedandinvasivesurveillanceweaponsevercreated,usedbygovernmentsaroundtheworld.Pegasusiswidelyregardedasthemosteffectiveandsought-aftercyber-surveillancesystemonthemarket.Thesystem’screator,theNSOGroup,aprivatecorporationheadquarteredinIsrael,isnotshyaboutproclaimingitsabilitytothwartterroristsandcriminals.“ThousandsofpeopleinEuropeowetheirlivestohundredsofourcompanyemployees,“NSO’scofounderdeclaredin2019.Thisboldassertionmaybetrue,atleastinpart,butit’sbynomeansthewholestory.NSO’sPegasussystemhasnotbeenlimitedtocatchingbadguys.It’salsobeenusedtospyonhundreds,andmaybethousands,ofinnocentpeoplearoundtheworld:headsofstate,diplomats,humanrightsdefenders,politicalopponents,andjournalists.Thisspywareisasinsidiousasitisinvasive,capableofinfectingaprivatecellphonewithoutalertingtheowner,andofdoingitsworkinthebackground,insilence,virtuallyundetectable.Pegasuscantrackaperson’sdailymovementinrealtime,gaincontrolofthedevice’smicrophonesandcamerasatwill,andcaptureallvideos,photos,emails,texts,andpasswords--encryptedornot.Thisdatacanbeexfiltrated,storedonoutsideservers,andthenleveragedtoblackmail,intimidate,andsilencethevictims.Itsfullreachisnotyetknown.“Ifthey’vefoundawaytohackoneiPhone,“saysEdwardSnowden,“they’vefoundawaytohackalliPhones.“Pegasusisalookinsidethemonthslongworldwideinvestigation,triggeredbyasinglespectacularleakofdata,andalookathowaninternationalconsortiumofreportersandeditorsrevealedthatcyberintrusionandcybersurveillancearehappeningwithexponentiallyincreasingfrequencyacrosstheglobe,atascalethatastounds.Meticulouslyreportedandmasterfullywritten,Pegasusshinesalightonthelivesthathavebeenturnedupsidedownbythisunprecedentedthreatandexposesthechillingnewwaysauthoritarianregimesareerodingkeypillarsofdemocracy:privacy,freedomofthepress,andfreedomofspeech.
