TwokindsofcosmopolitanvisionaretypicallyassociatedwithKant’spracticalphilosophy:ontheonehand,theidealofauniversalmoralcommunityofrationalagentswhoconstitutea’kingdomofends’quasharedhumanity.Ontheotherhand,theidealofadistinctlypoliticalcommunityof’worldcitizens’whosharemembershipinsomekindofglobalpolity.Kant’sGroundedCosmopolitanismintroducesanovelaccountofKant’sglobalthinking,onethathashithertobeenlargelyoverlooked:agroundedcosmopolitanismconcernedwithspellingoutthenormativeimplicationsofthefactthatapluralityofcorporealagentsconcurrentlyinhabittheearth’ssphericalsurface.Itisneitherconcernedwithacommunityofsharedhumanityintheabstract,norofsharedcitizenship,butwitha’disjunctive’communityofearthdwellers,thatis,embodiedagentsindirectphysicalconfrontationwitheachother.Kant’sgroundedcosmopolitanismaslaidoutintheDoctrineofRightframesthequestionhowindividualsrelatetooneanothergloballybyvirtueofconcurrentexistenceandderivesfromthisaspecificsetofconstraintsoncross-borderinteractions.
