WiththegrowthofthegardenclubmovementintheSouthduringtheearlyyearsofthetwentiethcentury,interestalsodevelopedinidentifyingandrecordingtheregion’simportantgardensandlandscapes.In1933Atlanta’sPeachtreeGardenClubproducedGardenHistoryofGeorgia,1733-1933inrecognitionofthestate’sbicentennial.Part1ofthebook,“Georgia’sEarlyGardens,“byFlorenceMarye,gives“acomprehensiverecordofgardeninginGeorgiafromOglethorpe’sday,1733,tothemostmoderngardenof1933.“Part2,oneofsevenpublicationsproducedintheSouthfrom1923to1939thatsurveyedstatewidegardenhistories,documents“ModernGardens“bothformalandrusticthroughoutallthephysiographicregionsofthestate.Part3,“GardenClubProjects,InstitutionalGardens,SchoolGardensandCampuses,“showssuchimpressivegardensasAtlanta’sWestViewCemeteryandthecampusesofOglethorpeUniversity,BerryCollege,andtheUniversityofGeorgia.Thoughtfullyillustratedwithperiodandhistoricphotographsandgardenplans,thesurveyiscomplementedbyagenealogyofGeorgiagardensandasummaryofhistoricplantsandplantingstyles.GardenHistoryofGeorgiaisalovingdocumentofthegardeninghistoryofthestatethatcoverswell-knownpublicgardenssuchasBarnsleyGardensinBartowCountyandtheAndrewLowHouseinSavannah,whileofferingalookatsomeofGeorgia’smostimpressiveprivategardens.Distinguishedbytheirvariety,theGeorgiagardensdocumentedherespanjustovertwohundredyears.Thesehomesandgardensstillresonatewiththemodernviewerbecausetheyrepresentthepeoplewhocreatedthem,theirrelationshipwiththenaturalenvironment,andatraditionofculturalexpressionthatcontinuestoday.
