Acolorful,insiderportraitof’70ssurfculture,withaforewordbyPulitzerPrize-winningauthorWilliamFinneganIfyouwerethere,evenjustforsomeofit--Hawaii,California,surfing,the’70s--thememoriesandstorieswillflowfreelyfromthesephotographs.JeffDivinewasthereforallofit,andtheseimageshavebeenculledfromanenormouspersonalarchive.DivinewasshootingforSurfer,themonthlymagazinethatwasthebibleofthescene.Hisphotosfromthisarchiveshowtheprecommercializederainsurfingwhenthehippieinfluencestillheldsway.Surfershadtheirownslang-infusedlanguageandweredeepintoaworldofMotherOcean,wildernessandaculturethatmainstreamsocietyspurned.Surfboardswerehandmadeinfamilygarages,oftenmadeforaspecifickindofwaveorspeed,forpaddling,easeofturning,andfeaturedallkindsofpsychedelicdesigns.SomewereevenhollowedouttosmugglehashfromMorocco.Thecolorandblack-and-whitephotographscollectedhere,takenthroughoutCaliforniaonthecoastlinesatBaja,DanaPoint,LagunaBeach,LaJolla,Malibu,SanClementeandOahu,giveavividimageofthisclose-knitcultureandtheincredibleathleticfeatsofitsheroesandheroines.RaisedinLaJolla,California,JeffDivine(born1950)startedphotographingthesurfingworldin1966.Heheldjobsasphotoeditorfor35yearswithSurfermagazineandSurfer’sJournal.Hisworkshavebeendisplayedworldwideinmuseumsandgalleries,aswellasinbooks,magazinesandmedia.In2019hewasinductedintotheHuntingtonBeachSurfingWalkofFameforhiscontributiontosurfcultureinacareerlasting50years.
